Gemini of Emeriaia is Kristen DaRay's debut novel, and it's a fantastic first effort. It's the story of Carson, a high school senior living in small town Aemrica. Even though she's the valedictorian of her school, her life doesn't seem to be going anywhere; she's been rejected by every college she's applied to.

But Carson discovers that's the least of her problems, because she's not just an ordinary high school senior. She's not even human - she gets a shock when her "aunt" revelas to her that she's an alien princess from the planet Emeriana, sent to Earth as a baby to protect her from her planet's enemies. She also learns that she's got mental powers that are separating her from her friends, and from the boy she's loved since childhood. But the biggest shock is the revelation that her enemies are on Earth too, hunting her down.

The author does a great job drawing Carson as a compelling and relatable heroine; her reactions to the news that she isn't who or what she thought she was, and that her whole life has been a lie, are very believable. The supporting characters have depth and life to them. The worldbuilding is also well-done; the reader is drawn into learning about Emeriana right along with Carson.

The prose is clean and clear, and DaRay does a nice job creating Carson's voice (the story is told by Carson in the firstperson). It's a fun read, and I'd definitely recommend it. It's also the first book of a series, and the ending will leave readers wanting the next chapter in the story.
