Espresso Shot centers on Clare's ex, Matteo and his snotty girlfriend Bree's upcoming wedding. Someone appears to be trying to kill Bree, both Matt and Quinn think Clare should investigate, and this particular reader just couldn't really care too much whether Bree made it to the altar or not. Her backstory is interesting, but comes as no surprise whatsoever. The highlight was getting little glimpses at the assorted folks with whom Madame, Matt and Clare have done business over the years--many of whom show up for Matt's wedding.

I think the "jump the shark" bit for me was that Clare catered Matt's reception--at least the dessert and coffee bar portion of it. Sure, this would be great publicity for the Blend as well as a nice opportunity to feature friend Janelle's amazing desserts. However, in terms of the human interest piece of it, this just doesn't fly. Your daughter is upstairs watching her dad remarry and you're down in the ballroom setting up the coffee bar. Not so much. (That's the only reason for the three stars--the mystery was solid, but the character's actions and then reactions based on what other people did said--esp. as relates to Clare and Matt--just rings false and inconsistent.)
