This is the best book I read in 2006. I am not a fan of this author as I didn't like Captain Corelli's Mandolin very much. I couldn't finish that one, this one I couldn't put down. It is a superbly written historical novel and the juxtaposition of the stories of the Muslim families and the the stupidities of the First World War is superb. I knew very little about the etyhnic cleansing that went on in Southern Europe at this time. It is quite a substantial read but well worth it. Lovers of historical fiction and beautifully written prose will really enjoy this.
