This was a fascinating and different view of the way we perceive our sexuality. It's the story of Maria, a young, naive Brazilean girl who doesn't want to live and die in her small town. She moves to the big city where she is talked into signing a contract to teach Samba in Switzerland, where she eventually becomes a highly paid prostitute. Maria grows up quickly torn between wanting to do well and missing her family, she faces many choices and along the way learns about the ways of the world and about herself. She learns the difference between sex and fulfillment. Through Maria, the book explores the eleven minutes -- thought to be the average duration of a sexual encounter -- in detail.
