it was amazing
Read in June, 1986

This is the last Hardy I read, I don't know if I'll ever go back and read Tess of the d'Ubervilles or Far from the Madding Crowd. I was out of my Hardy-mania when I got to this book. But maybe I liked it more for not being a fan. His writing is still stunningly beautiful. The relationship between Jude and his wife is so palpable, you close the book thinking you know two people. Jude's weakness, as perceived by his wife, devolves from a sensitivity towards life. But you understand her POV also. The scene where he can't slaughter the pig correctly and the blood is wasted. That's so wonderful.
