did not like it
bookshelves: middling

I read this a year after I finished A Million Little Pieces so I knew all about the controversy and Frey's writing style...but I was still disappointed. I guess I liked a Million Little Pieces because of Frey's use of the Tao, I thought he was getting somewhere with that. I thought I could see some kind of redemption perhaps. The Tao was curiously absent from My Friend Leonard, perhaps it helped him kick the addiction but he didn't seem to apply it to the greater whole of his life. Once the stint in rehab was over his self interest seemed to grow instead of diminish. All I could hear whilst reading this book was me, me,me,me - the level of his self-absorption was too high for me to feel any kind of connection with him. He was truly fortunate to have a friend like Leonard but it seemed that the more he got the less he gave.
