bookshelves: nonfiction-biography

An interesting biography of the famous Renaissance artist, scientist, and inventor, illustrated with Da Vinci's sketches and the author's own paintings. Some of her paintings incorporate Da Vinci's artwork, such as a page showing him display a painting to a patron. There is a short bibliography but no source notes. The text notes contradictions in Da Vinci's work; for example, he was a vegetarian and man of peace, but his inventions include machine guns, bombs, and even a tank. A postscript explains that Da Vinci's notebooks were lost or sold to collectors in pieces; "it is frustrating to image how the development of science and technology might have been advanced if only his work had been published." For older elementary readers.
