liked it

one of those books that's just bad enough to not want to read, yet just good enough to not quit.

well, i liked Scalzi's other books. and, while i cant say that they were amazing, i definitely thought that they were entertaining--even though i had some issues with the content. i tell my friends that its "sci-fi lite".

but this wasnt very great. but, as i said, its just good enough to make you want to not quit--which is extremely annoying. i guess that's the best word to describe this book: annoying. the dialogue, although quasi-natural in its rhythm, is annoying. its not the dialogue from any 14-year-olds that i've ever known (including the ones i knew when i was 14). the sarcasm is annoying. many of the events are annoying. the predictability of the plot that parallels The Lost Colony is annoying. the werewolves (yes.) are annoying. and probably the biggest annoyance, in my opinion, is that with all the sarcasm, the emotional buildup fizzles. with someone cracking jokes at everything that comes along, you start to believe that the main protagonist is very shallow and two-dimensional. and when the climax of the book starts to get emotional, you dont believe it.

the other thing is the whole female protagonist thing. so many authors are putting girls in the lead roles just because it somehow is supposed to be empowering to women. and while i dont totally disagree, many of the protagonists that have been written into stories are nothing like any woman that i've met--this included. i understand its fantasy and that this point could be argued with men too, but it defeats the purpose of woman-power by putting in another caricature of a woman--no matter how "modern" it is.

in the end, i thought that Scalzi's writing was decent. a little phoned-in, perhaps. not all bad, though. however, in the end, i could care less about the telling of Zoe's own tale. i'd rather some new story in the universe.

(don't even get me started on the Consu! annoying!)
