** spoiler alert ** A friend loaned me this book last year. I was Immediately transported to Afghanistan. There is a sense of charm that seemed to pervade my reading. I don’t know how an author is able to transmit through the written word that sense, but he does and it works. Even the scene where he allows his servant to be raped, you see the world through a strange lens. I never figured out if it is tone of narration, the projected age of the storyteller, or an innate ability that the writer has, but it works. Not a young persons’ book, too much happens to be considered light reading, but a fascinating look into a culture that is on the front pages of newspapers every day.
