In "Devil's Bargain", Tony Daniel gives us a story that has been long overdue in the "Original Series" books. With this one, we have an asteroid that is threatening to wipe out the people of the planet. The Enterprise is sent there in an attempt to evacuate the planet only to find the rulers of the planet not so willing due to a secret that they hold which involves them being tied into the planet in more ways than one. In order to save them, though, Spick devises a deal with the devil so to speak by suggesting that the Horta could be the needed savior of the Vesbian people & their society. Daniel's story is actually very well done & plays the Vesbians in a way that while making them just paranoid enough, but not to an extreme to make them believable. Also the typical Kirk love story helps, but it's the Horta who end up stealing the show as we learn a lot more about the mysterious race from Janus VI. The use of the enigmatic Horta as well as the paranoia of the anti-alien faction Exos make "Devil's Bargain" one of the better stories in this series in a while. The resolution itself while not being perfect is actually very well executed & overall this book is a nice change of pace in a part of this timeline where so many stories have already been told.
