This was the first book I read as a kid that made me think about the financial struggles some families face. It's not that my family was uber-wealthy and money was no issue, but they kept me blissfully unaware of monetary concerns for a pretty long time (which made high school econ a class that induced panic attacks for me). I think this book does a great job of dealing with the subject without being in-yo-face about it. It's also a nice glimpse into father daughter relationships. And of course, the dad was always nicer than the totally stressed-out mom, who always reminded my of Lois from Malcom in the Middle.

Readalikes: Other Beverly Cleary titles, Judy Blume's Fudge series, Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh
