In the beginning I was somewhat distracted by Mr. Mistry's seeming need to show off his mastery of the "transition from one paragraph to another" and "keep a red thread going from one scene to another". I found myself wishing for an abrupt change in the narration that required me to pay attention. Then later on he seemed to want to show off his mastery of "I don't have to follow any rules" by changing point of view from third to first person mid-paragraph.

Being distracted by his quirky writing style aside, I found this a compelling and thoroughly convincing story about realistic and sympathetic characters in a setting that was both informative (historically and culturally) and entertaining. The book left memorable scenes and vignettes that will not readily fade.

I can't wait to read A Fine Balance, given that most of the reviews say it is even better.
