bookshelves: memoir, psychology

The author occupies a unique position of both a patient of manic depression and a researcher of this same mental disorder. She takes an approach more personal than professional and describes the struggles faced by those suffering with manic depression (also described as bipolar disorder).

She describes her high cycles and her lows, her struggles to adjust to lithium, her professional challenges and complicated romantic relationships. She took a great risk in writing a "tell all," but the world is enriched by her descriptions. I recommend this as a way to develop greater insight and empathy for those who struggle with "an unquiet mind."
