This is indeed a brilliant book. But, is it a good book?
While anyone who rates this at one star will get no argument from me, I think it is a good book. It is an insightful history of superhero comics, and an interesting deconstruction of the genre. It is meticulously written, and precisely planned. It makes me think, and I get something different from it every time I read it.
I do not believe it is the final word in superhero comics as some would suggest. In fact, I suppose one of my biggest problem with Watchmen is it's legacy, and the degree to which comics would change in a post Watchmen world.
I've heard many people say "it's a comic book for people who don't read/like comic books. I could not disagree with that more. If you do not read/like comics I would suggest anything written by Carl Barks.
