This book was depressing to me. As the first Raymond Carver read I'm not sure how it compares with his other stories but I would finish each story slightly depressed. I almost gave it a three star.

However, I had to push it to four for two reasons. First, the short story included, "A small good thing" which was poignant and powerful. Second, the overall way in which he wrote mesmerized me. His explorations into human character and the ways in which we, as people, are laid bare in certain circumstances.

All in all, not the most uplifting, but I do have the desire to read more of his work.
