One can only imagine that Twain needed money desperately and quickly when he dashed off the miserable sequels to his magisterial Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Tom Sawyer Abroad is terrible, simply terrible and I imagine Tom Sawyer, Detective is also.

Actually, Tom Sawyer, Detective is not miserable at all. Okay, so perhaps it's not as deep as the whole Huck Finn business, but but it's better than Abroad and rather entertaining. Read it as a child, after The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (before reading Huck, which made some parts a little puzzling), and it was lots of fun.
