I've enjoyed Sarah Waters other books, so I have to admit I was a little disappointed in The Little Stranger. Telling the story of a country doctor in post-WWII England, and his relationship with the Ayres family of the decaying, once-glorious Hundreds manor, the book slowly sets up to be an all-out ghost story, but never really delivers. There were several chilling passages that worked well, and overall the book was of course well-written (Waters is a great writer), but the story just kind of went pfffftt for me, and I thought "that's it?" when I closed the book.
