Another installment in my rereading of the Elemental Masters series and this one – did I just blank out the first time through or did I skip this one? Set during WWI, this one was darker all around than many of the other books in this series, but well written and detailed. Once again, the “Masters” are a bunch of myopic misogynistic useless dudes and our heroine is left to get through everything on her own. Ellie’s journey was interesting as she ends up essentially self-taught and Lackey developed some really interesting philosophical elements to her magic system. Overall, a very enjoyable read and strong, engaging forward motion in the plot.
