I can't recall a book with more charm and humanity than White Jacket. Great passages on daily life aboard a warship as related by the title character known only by the white jacket he wears. And I had no idea that Melville was so damn funny. Each character aboard the ship is clearly an allegory for characteristics of America of the late 1800s; often not subtle characters, but engrossing. If only read for his broadsides against corporal punishment, which entail several full chapters, the book would be worthwhile. A terrific book that will change the way many think of Melville.
