did not like it
bookshelves: horror, ghost-stories

I'm afraid I set my expectations based on the subtitle. The prose is more intelligently and less sordidly written than a lot of ghost-related books, but the chapters on cultural beliefs about ghosts make up only the first couple of chapters, and even then the author is bad at citing his sources. Thereafter, the book devolves into a handbook for contemporary ghost hunting, which is not what I signed up for. I came for the history, was intrigued by the little bit I was given, and then scanned the rest of the book while cursing false advertising.
