Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee
Feb 16, 2013
A thoughtful biography of the famous writer that shines some light on her reasons and inspirations for writing To Kill a Mockingbird; however, as Lee herself did not work with the writer of this book, it also leaves a number of intruiging questions raised but unanswered. It's easy to imagine (the cause Shields seems to suggest for the fact that Lee never wrote a second book) how much pressure a writer can put on themselves to achieve, when their first book is such an astounding success. Still, I wonder whether that's enough of an explanation for why Lee only ever produced one book. Though perhaps her house is chock-full of a lifetime's worth of manuscripts...who knows?
