it was amazing
bookshelves: wishlist

the following snippet sums it up for me

"Books must prefer their own company to that of human beings, who rarely use them in the proper or appropriate way. As they stand quietly on the shelf with only the narrow spines turned to the world, they know they will not have to suffer the indignity of supporting a cup of coffee and getting branded for their efforts — or cushioning, say, a yellowing apple-core for days on end. And even when they are taken down from the shelf and read for the wisdom they may, just happen, to contain, they invariably suffer further indignities: a pencil will be placed between their pages and thereby weaken their spine, the final effect of which is that one secretly determined day all twelve hundred pages of War and Peace or Les Miserables will suicidally rebel against this misuse and flutter to the floor, their sequence lost forever, at least in this incarnation."
