In the Upper Country

This book was cleverly written, sharing the past of free black people and towns in Canada, unlike the U.S. in the 19th century. The interwoven stories (some read aloud from old texts and journals and others told from memory) beautifully led up to the climax of the novel.
This book was recommended by Ann Pachett's book club, and once again, this novel was both a treasure to read and revealed a past of which I had little knowledge.
