Weirdly, even though this book won the National Book Award, I feel like it was merely OK. I am also usually head-over-heels about anything set during the 1940s, too, but somehow this story about a shady connection forged during World War II and the teenage girl who discovers it felt a little flat. I was intrigued by the romance with a much older man, but felt it included a lot of unrealistic dialogues and situations, as well. It left me strangely cold.
