Two short stories provide a worthy ending to the grandest sci-fi story of them all. The first continues the story of the Mule and his search for the Second Foundation who he believes to be the only force capable of stopping his galactic domination. The rise of the Second Foundation as a controlling force is beautifully handled and their use of mind control neatly mirrors the Mule’s own powers.

The power of the Second Foundation, and the true Hari Seldon plan for them to step in and take over the running of the new galactic empire, in effect becoming a ruling class over the rest of humanity, including the First Foundation, is all smart stuff.

The Mule’s defeat is kind of inevitable, but it’s the emergence of the new power that carries on into the second story. The battle between the two foundations, mainly through the effort of a teenage girl, is not only a great fight, but the bluff and double bluff ending is very satisfying. The explanation of young Arkady’s role is deftly handled and provides a neat twist to the end.

A classic trilogy that stands the test of time.
