really liked it

Describes the life of the last empress of China. A very well-written novel in Buck's characteristic style. Buck takes you on the journey of the life of a young Chinese girl forced into a life of royal concubinage and her rise to power through her Machivellian operations. My feelings about the book were ambivalent because I found myself sympathizing with the protogonist while reading the book, yet was clearly antogonistic to her for her callousness and indulgences that resulted in such suffering for her subjects.
