I didn't like this book as much as the other Tortall series I've read, mostly because it felt more like a police procedural dressed up in fantasy trappings than Pierce's other books. Also, I found the "Dog" colloquialism and related puns very grating after a while -- reminded me a bit too much of the whole UW Dawg thing, I guess. However, I thought Pierce did a really good job of accurately describing the kind of bribery & corruption that permeates any kind of police force, and the ethical struggles and trade-offs that officers are sometimes forced to make in order to "keep the peace." It was also interesting to see how different Corus was 200 years before the time of Alanna the Lionness -- in some ways women had more freedom in that era than they do in Pierce's other books. I'll probably read the second book in this series, if only to see what happens to Beka next.
