Books about history can often be dry and boring, but apparently nobody told David McCullough! His 1776 was a fascinating, easy-to-read recounting of the events of the American Revolution in that year. I thought it would be appropriate to read a book about the War for Independence right around Independence Day, so I started it on July 4th (and finished on July 10th - that should tell you how good the book was!) McCullough uses lots of primary source material, but he manages to keep things feeling like a story - and it’s a pretty dramatic story! - and doesn’t get bogged down in statistics or minutiae. If history teachers and writers taught and wrote more like McCullough, there would likely be many more people interested in the subject of history.
