did not like it

When I saw this fantastic cover, I just had to read this thing! I was expecting a creepy little YA thriller about a psychic boy with a mystery to solve. What I got was a seriously heavy, heartbreaking story about mental health, suicide, family trauma, school shootings--all the things! I DNFed at 25% when I saw where this was going. I appreciate what the author is trying to do here, but I feel that playing the sympathy card for a school shooter (one of Jake's many ghosts) is highly, HIGHLY problematic. And then there's the whole "mental illness = gun violence" stigmatizing narrative that didn't sit well with me, and probably a lot of readers as well. Like I said, problematic. I think the author's intentions are pure, but this book could potentially do more harm than good.
