I enjoyed Flaubert's writing but I really did not like the main character, Emma Bovary. She was a very weak character. She chases after two men besides her husband in the book because she is bored with her relatively normal life with Charles. Her spending habits and indiscretions almost ruin the family finances. One thing to remember is that the book takes place during the mid-1800s and that women were a lot more reliant on men then. It is definitely hard to separate present day mentalities pushed on classic novels where times were different.
