So far, both more optimistic and more depressing than "Complications," and more theory than practice which tends to make it less interesting to me as a medical book. Where Complications told horrible operating-room tales of mysterious brain worms or delicate nerve surgery, "Better" is about the physician's place in the world at large, for better or for worse. So while it's inspiring to read, for example, about the team that works day and night to get clean, reliable medicine to refugees in Sudan, and that the doctors do absolutely everything right, no cross-contamination, no skimming off the top for the rich or whatever... and then read that it barely HELPS and everyone's dying anyway... again, inspirational medical texts come in all kinds.

I'm up to the part about doctors helping with death row exectutions. Ethical, or no?
