it was amazing

Not since Tolkien have I read a a book with such a fully realized world. Stephenson has created a world much like ours with a complex history of nations, empires, religions, and cultures that have risen and fallen over the centuries. One key difference that sets our world apart from theirs is that instead of science becoming instilled in the universities it blossoms in the monasteries. Monks make vows and set apart worldly possessions to study mathematical proofs and practice the scientific method. If you find anthropology fascinating, aren't turned off by a little math, and love a great story with more that a little quantum theory injected into its beating heart you will love this book. It got nominated for the Hugo this year.
