I picked this up because it's by the same author who wrote "English Patient". I didn't read that book, but the movie made me ooze with girlie feelings and a massive crush on Ralph Finnes (which lasted even after seeing his performance in "The Red Dragon"), so I thought I'd probably enjoy another Ondaatje story. I did.

The book is similar to English Patient- themes of human rights and archeology- but the story and characters are different enough that it is fresh. Anil's Ghost is a fictional novel set in the reality of the Sri Lankan civil war during the 1990's.

I thought that the book either needed to be longer or have fewer characters. The characters were original, but at the end I felt I needed to know them better before I could be truly moved by the their tragedies. The somewhat incomplete character development is what kept me from enjoying this book at a 4 star level.
