The first time I read this series I read them completely out of order (as it's not made readily apparent anywhere in the later books that they are, for all intents and purposes, a trilogy), and was thus greatly releaved to finally stumble into this, the first of the series, and get the setup glancingly referenced in later books. It's a lot of fun, featuring poker and tarot cards and archetypes in Las Vegas...classic Tim Powers, in other words. The setting is, to me, so alien that I don't like it quite as much as some of his others, but it has the usual tight plotting, interesting characters, and zany flood of ideas that mark Powers at his best.
