This was only the 2nd audio book that I absolutely hated. I thought the reader was a complete failure. A total failure at not only impersonating men and women, but Jewish men and women at that. How can this woman be an actress? It was dreadful to listen to, and I'm afraid that it has tainted my enjoyment of the book.

Trying to set aside the audio....I very much enjoyed the plot. The characters were all very flawed and extremely realistic. Except Audrey. I almost wish that Heller hadn't given us that initial glimpse of Audrey when she first met Joel because it didn't jibe with the rest of her character. Sure, there was that section of the story where we learn that people used to find Audrey's nihlism amusing, until it became what she was--no humor about it. Still, I kept thinking back to the first 50 pages and wondering if we'd get another glimpse of that girl.

Heller has taken issue with organized religion and it is played out extremely well through her characters. Maybe some time away from the grating audio voice will bring a less harsh assessment. We'll see.
