This book contains the Stupidest Sentence In the History of Literature, Excluding Harlequin Romances. Ready? "Piper leaned closer. Her breath smelled of coffee and remorse." Really? REALLY, Jodi Picoult (and Jodi Picoult's editor?) If you can ignore poor Piper's psychologically induced halitosis, this book was very readable, especially the medical and legal detail. Neither of the two children seemed believable to me, especially their precocious dialogue, but heck, I'm not an expert. And it was much, much better than her last novel, which made my breath smell like Diet Coke and resentment.
