Review: Shusterman has written another funny book, even though, the topic is death from start to finish. The first death is a balloon handler falling from a flyaway raccoon during a Macy’s day parade in NYC. The second prospective death is Gunner Umlaut, a friend of Antsy’s, who says he has six months to live. It escalates from there. Soon Antsy & Gunner are killing all of the plants in Gunner’s backyard in an attempt to recreate “The Dust Bowl” for a school project. The book really takes off when Antsy decides to give Gunner a month of his life & lots of their classmates get on board. There are lots of ups & downs, culminating in an all-school assembly in honor of Gunner & Antsy, during which Antsy’s Dad has a near fatal heart attack, an event that puts everything in perspective. Antsy focuses on what is important & is thus able to cope with the news that Gunner never had a fatal disease, & that he & his big sister Kjersten, whom Antsy has begun dating, are moving back to Sweden because their father has gambled away every penny they own. I listened to the book on CD, read by the author, and Shusterman’s sense of humor came across in every word he wrote & read. Peg Dombek
