Although I did get caught up in the plot/storyline, both Marlena and August's characters were not very vividly drawn. Other than the fact that Marlena reminded him of a girl he had a crush on in college, it was hard to understand the strength of Jacob's attraction for Marlena, because we don't really know her. And for someone who has been psychologically and verbally abused for years, most of the time she doesn't hesitate to put her foot down with him (especially if her animals are concerned).

Mostly, though, I would hesitate to recommend this book because of the graphic sexuality. The one genuine love scene in the book is not graphic, but other sexual acts are VERY graphic -- so the vivid descriptions we're given are twisted ones.
