I really wanted to like this book. I loved the premise. The plot was intriguing. It was quick-paced, suspenseful, and it had me guessing along the way, first one way, then the other. The characters were puzzling, but in a good way, the plot was building, the storyline was getting more complex, and I was anticipating a spectacular ending. Then it was over, suddenly and without fanfare. After the mystery was solved and the main character Alice Fancourt's actions explained, it did not make sense and the story was too far-fetched for me to believe or even justify. If I'm reading a contemporary fiction I expect the basis of the book to be plausible and true to life. For me, this was not.

I will give the author credit in that the book was well written and the plot was gripping as it held my attention throughout the book, but in the end it was missing something. The conclusion was underdeveloped and it ended too abruptly.
