This book and I have a relationship of about six or seven years maturity and though the beginning was acutely intense and varyingly feverish the passing years have brought a kind of calm and comfort to our bond and we no longer harm each other with the ferocity of our feelings. We still see each other once a year for several weeks at a time, or perhaps more often if it's a difficult year in my case, but this one meeting is enough not just to sustain the relationship, but to see it flourish and bring back all the best of those first years. I value and hold it as the most essential volume in my reading life.
