17 wanna-be writers have gathered for a secret writer's retreat. Once they get to the retreat, they are told that they cannot leave until they have composed the story of a lifetime. They will have plenty of food, water, and all the necessities of daily living. A few days into the retreat, people start sabotaging their 3 month supplies, people are inflicting massive injuries upon themselves, and cannibalism begins. During the main plot, each character tells a short story about himself, each story is either disgusting, twisted, gory, or unbelievable. Supposedly over 70 people have fainted when Palahniuk read the first story "Guts," aloud. Not sure I believe that, but the first story is definitely sickening. This was my least favorite Palahniuk book, he is an amazing writer, but this book crossed so many lines and was so twisted, that I expected a great Palahniuk twist at the end. But I was disappointed, for all the build-up, it just came to an abrupt end.
