Back in the day, when this was first published, I can understand that it broke some new ground and, best I know, introduced, or at least popularized, a new genre in fiction: the serial killer thriller. Now that the novel is over 50 years old, with a legion of similar titles that have taken the genre to new heights (some would say depths), it feels a bit dated and even tame. Don't get me wrong, it's well-written and interesting, and Norman Bates will always be a fascinating character. It just doesn't have the shock value it did back in 1959.
