I didn't particularly enjoy this at all. Firstly, it's a book about four people who intensely dislike each other but for some fairly unexplicable reasons spend time with each other. Secondly, it's a book about four people who want to kill themselves. Thirdly, all four of these people narrate the book, one after the other, even when they're observing and participating in the same scenes.

It would be very hard to pull off, and Hornby doesn't manage it. I was longing for it to end and hoping that some of the characters might just decide to finally throw themselves off the bloody roof to speed the story along. Alas, everyone survives. OK, the one thing Hornby manages to do is create a narrative that is both irritating and dull, but I'm not sure that's a skill he should be trying to develop.
