Readable story about Chinese immigrants to Canada who work hard to make a living from their restaurant. The story is a first person narrative from the sensitive daughter who grows up speaking Englsh like a Canadian native and behaving herself in school like a good Chinese girl. Living in close proximity to her parents, estranged from each other, and her adult brother, she also learns about family secrets and tensions. This is the only novel Judy Fong Bates has written. It was published in 2005 and she has recently released a memoir. I think that this novel is basically a memoir, and as such it is a disappointment as a novel.
