This would be a great read-aloud. The writing is beautiful; the phrases are perfect - both funny and moving. During WWII in London, David grieves the loss of his mother and is jealous of his father's new wife, Rose and his half-brother Georgie. He escapes into stories that he learned to love from his mother, until one day he literally falls into an alternate world behind the garden wall. There, David bravely encounters fairy tale and mythical creatures in a quest to bring his mother and himself back.
