really liked it

3.5 to 4 stars I definitely enjoyed this (as much as you can "enjoy" reading about terrible things happening to a person) but overall I was the slightest bit disappointed. I think maybe my expectations were too high. The story was very readable, in terms of writing style, and even though it's a thick book, it goes by quickly. It was powerful and much more affecting than some Christian historical fiction, and the author did a good job of updating a Bible story into the California gold rush setting. But I never really felt connected to the characters. I felt sympathy for them, but in a distant way. Also, the story feels a bit repetitive at times (all that running away), and Angel could be very wishwashy. I suppose that's expected with the tragic life she'd had, but sometimes I just couldn't follow her thought process (though once again, I've never been in her situation and I know her past was driving the decisions she made).

I didn't like Paul one bit. (view spoiler)

This book was good and it was powerful. Just not as much so as I expected. It's worth the read, but I've read other Christian historical fiction that has touched me and impacted me more than this one did.
