I love this tome of a novel (600+pages) for very personal reasons – I was involved in rebuilding the I-Hotel nearly 30 years after its tenants were evicted. If you’re up for an unusual reading adventure or want to read about the U.S. in the ‘60s and ‘70s from a very different point of view, consider this book. The huge cast of characters in the ten novellas and use of different writing styles (including play, poetry, graphic novel), won’t make this an easy, straight forward read, but these choices work in capturing the frenetic, uncomfortable and sometimes disjointed feel of a nascent movement. Some of the characters are hilarious, others heartbreaking, and still others will push your buttons.
