After reading about a third of the book, I've given up.

There is a lot of vaguery around what is happening in any given scene with the focus on the letters between the main characters. But that means a lot of it doesn't make much sense.

And this vaguery really undermines one of the conceits of the two character's communications. The incredibly elaborate methods of sending letters to one another is meant to imply the great lengths and effort they are going to in order to display affection for one another. But... without any real grounding you can't see how these methods would even work (e.g. travelling back to continuously meddle with a field of trees to create a message would surely be noticed, maybe, hard to say because of the lack of details).
