The story of a little girl in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan who falls down an abandoned mine shaft. During her rescue attempt the narrative goes back and forth between the present and the past. Sometimes the very, very distant past of the little girl's ancestors - both in China and Finland.

My book club discussed this with mixed reviews. Not many were able to finish it; most liked the present-day parts of the story best, although the discussion was almost exclusively about the historical chapters (which I liked better).
