This may be my choice for the Moby Dick of the 20th century: an amazingly rich book that can overwhelm the unprepared. The intellectual accomplishment dwarfs the narrative appeal, in a way, but that's hardly a criticism. I have found this novel to reward me more each time I have returned to it.
